My intrepidness was tested.

Another dark, damp, windy morning. After a little shall me, wont we over breakfast we went down to the Drain at Bradney again. There is a practical reason for going there so much. Bradney to Chedzoy is paved. All our other walks are on or through grass.

There are three Zoy's. Chedzoy, Middlezoy and Westonzoyland. Middlezoy is the last of the three in a line out over the levels. The road leads to Athelney. In around 880ad King Alfred the Great was fighting the Danes who had been slowly invading from Denmark and Germany. He had been beaten in battle and had retreated to a small Island on the marshes. Athelney, Isle of Princes. A Saxon Prince was call an Athling. Anyway, he regrouped at Athelney, there is a story that he was so deep in thought one time that he allowed the cakes being cooked for a meal to burn. He sallied forth and defeated the Danes in a few battles so they sued for peace. He married off his sister to the Danish King as a sign of trust and converted them to
Christianity. He was a civilised man for his time. He could read and write putting diplomacy before conflict. He even thought that women might one day be taught to read. A radical in some ways. No wonder he was called Great.

Back to the walk. It was spitting a little when we started out. I tried to look intrepid.

Me looking intrepid.

Pluto met the Bullocks again.

We walked on and watched a Bull on the opposite side of the water. I had thought of walking back that side but thought better of it.

On our way back the whole heard came to greet us. Perhaps they felt there was safety in numbers.
